A 16-year-old girl sexually harassed in Sliema
Police are investigating an incident in which a 16-year-old girl was sexually harassed while walking with her friend in Sliema.
A police spokesman confirmed that the incident was being investigated after a man slammed into the young man’s buttocks after the two girls, both 16 years old, refused to welcome the his requests for chat.
The incident took place at around 6pm on Tuesday evening in the Pjazzetta in Sliema.
Contacted by the Times of Malta, the girl’s mother explained how her daughter and her friend were shopping in Sliema when the incident took place near Intersport and Starbucks on the façade of Sliema.
The woman said the girls had just walked out of a shop when they were approached by a man who asked them if he could talk to them for a minute. He was told to go and not to talk to strangers.
“That was when the man seemed angry that they did not want to talk to him and gave a blow to my daughter. She screamed because she kept shaking and then burst into tears. It was a real shock, “she said.
The mother said nearby people intervened and two of them detained the man while calling police. However, an official on the other end of the line told them to “let him go because he’s regular.” Shortly after he was left, he looked bright at two seniors, she claimed.
“It simply came to our notice then. The police have a duty to act on a report. I want this man to be caught and stopped, especially if it is normal for me to mean that the police know about him and know that he usually does this to other people. I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else, “said the mother, visibly angry at the inaction of the police.
“I presented a report at the Sliema police station. All the more so because this young man is regular should be stopped and not allowed. The girls are fine but traumatized, ”she said.
She said she was assured the police were examining the matter.
She appealed to anyone who happened to be there at the time and who has footage of the incident to come forward. The woman said that people told her that the man is known to be next to the women on the façade of Sliema.
Just on Wednesday, a man was brought to court after he allegedly raped two elderly people while they were walking through the streets of Ħamrun.
