Exhibited until Sunday: This is what the new state library should look like – the library projects are available
Liechtenstein is getting a new state library in the former post office and administration building in Vaduz. The winning project of the architectural competition has been chosen. All competition entries will be on display until Sunday.
The architectural competition for the new building of the Liechtenstein National Library in Vaduz, which will be announced throughout Europe in spring 2021, has been decided. The jury, under the professional direction of architect Werner Binotto, chose the project “896795” by Morger Partner Architekten AG from Basel as the winner.
Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2024 and completion is scheduled for fall 2026.
The winning project and all other competition entries will be on display in the Spoerry area in Vaduz until Sunday, July 24th. Also, they are on the internet at www.neue-lilb.li viewable.
Place to learn, stay and meet
In May 2019, the state parliament approved the commitment loan for the conversion of the Vaduz post office and administration building for the Liechtenstein National Library. A European architectural competition was announced in 2021.
The state library does not have enough space at its current location at Gerberweg 5 in Vaduz. A media release states that a modern public library for the entire population is to be built with a new building. This also includes the population on the other side of the Rhine on the Swiss side, since around a third of the loans go to the St.Gallen Rhine Valley.
“At the new, centrally located location in Vaduz, the state library can strengthen its role as an important media provider in the state and develop into a place for learning, staying and meeting,” the media release continues.
The winning project by Morger Partner Architekten AG is convincing due to the clear and efficient use of the existing building. Architecturally, the planned building surprises with its relaxed overall appearance, which appears appropriate to a state library. The existing concrete support structure of the post office and administration building can continue to be used in the new building. This saves around 2800 tons of CO2. (you)
