The Grande Opera debuts tonight on Rai 3 at the Verona Arena with Luca Zingaretti. The first show will be “Carmen” by Georges Bizet, an opera in four acts.

Tonight, broadcast on Rai 3 from 9.00 pm, La Grande Opera arrives at the Verona Arena, with the extraordinary participation of Luca Zingaretti, an appointment to bring the Opera closer to the general public. The debut tonight with Georges Bizet’s “Carmen”, an opera consisting of four acts, from the libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. L’play is inspired by the novel of the same name of 1845 by the French author Prosper Mérimée and was performed for the first time at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875. The story is centered in 1820 in Spain, precisely in Seville, where the sergeant José and the cigar-maker, suspected of smuggling, Carmen, experiencing an intense pursuit of love, between the violence of a stab and a missed arrest. The bullfighter Escamillo enters powerfully into the story, who will conquer Carmen of her, however, inducing her to her death, due to a stab of jealousy by José.
Act One
The first act opens with the dialogue between the sergeant José and Lieutenant Zuniga on the story of Micaela, a young orphan raised by her mother as a daughter. The speech continues at the gates of the cigar factory, where the gypsy Carmen works, who seeks José’s attention throwing him a flower. A scream from the factory tells of Carmen’s violence, who stabbed someone: Don José enters to capture her and Lieutenant Zuniga orders her arrest. She locked up in a cell, Carmen reveals her love for Joséurging her to free her: the knots are loosened, so as to allow the woman to escape.

Second act
The woman, now on the run for a month, sings and dances with her friends Mercedes and Frasquita at the tavern in Lillas Pastia. This is where the bullfighter Escamillo comes into play, trying to seduce Carmen, which, however, rejects him. The woman, on the other hand, confides to her friends to run away in love with Don José, who appears shortly after, just released from prison for having factor in the woman. There the two confess their love, but are interrupted by Zuniga who calls the sergeant to the appeal, who decides to join Carmen and the outlaws, fleeing from the tavern.

Third act
The third act opens on the mountains where the smugglers’ den is located. Carmen and José now quarrel frequently and their relationship is winding down. The cards predict a near death for Carmen and for José the same fate, shortly after her. Immediately after, unseen, Micaela enters looking for Don José. Escamillo also arrives and José, jealous of his rival, challenges him to a duel but are divided by Carmen who is now conquered by the bullfighter. Micaela is found hidden among the rocks and announces to José that her mother is on the verge of death: he follows her, but swears revenge on Carmen.

Fourth act
Plaza de Toros in Seville, it is the day of the bullfight and the crowd awaits Escamillo who triumphantly enters the arena. Carmen indulges in Escamillo and also doesn’t care about Mercedes and Frasquita’s warnings: Don José is around. Ignoring the advice of her friends, Carmen meets him and José begs Carmen to come back with him. To her contemptuous refusals, José threatens her but she throws at him the ring he had given her months ago. The crowd applauds the victorious Escamillo while José, blinded by anger, kills Carmen with a stab and surrenders to the gendarmes.
