The draft resolution presented in the US Senate on the recognition of Russia’s actions in Ukraine as genocide
A bipartisan group of senior US senators has introduced a draft resolution recognizing Russia’s unprovoked war against Ukraine as genocide against the Ukrainian people.
The text of the draft has been published in the Foreign Affairs Committee websiteUkrinform correspondent reports.
“There is no question that what Russia is doing in Ukraine is genocide,” said Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho).
He recalled the crimes committed by the Russian troops in Irpin, Hostomel and other Ukrainian settlements. “The international community documents many Russian abuses that amount to war crimes throughout Ukraine. It’s time for the United States and the world to recognize it as such,” said Senator Risch.
Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), head of the US Helsinki Commission, said that Russia’s actions are genocide, not limited to war.
“Russia is trying to eviscerate not only Ukrainian people and buildings, but also the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian history and Ukrainian culture. This is genocide. The world must recognize this fact and those responsible must be held accountable,” Senator Cardin said.
The resolution condemns Russia for having committed genocide against the Ukrainian people; calls on the United States and its NATO and EU allies to support the Ukrainian government in preventing further Russian genocide against the Ukrainian people; and supports courts and international criminal investigations to hold Russian political leaders and soldiers accountable for war of aggression, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
The draft was introduced by US Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), chairman of the US Helsinki Commission and author of the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. , Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Jeanne Shaheen (DN.H.) and Lindsey Graham (RS.C.).
As Ukrinform previously reported, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, stressed the importance of the US Congress recognizing the crimes committed by Russian invasion forces in Ukraine as genocide.
