Red Bull Salzburg: Are Camara and Co. on the verge of extinction? – Soccer
At Red Bull Salzburg, the squad for the 2022/23 season is largely in place, but there could still be three players left.
As RBS sports director Christoph Freund explains, “something else could happen” with the more than 30-strong squad. Mohamed Camara, Albert Vallci and Antoine Bernede are candidates for a change, all three were not in the squad for the dress rehearsal on Tuesday against Ajax Amsterdam (match report).
Camara was recently linked with Leeds United from the English Premier League, but the transfer to the club from ex-“Bulls” coach Jesse Marsch burst (read here). He is also said to have attracted interest from Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United and RB Leipzig.
After his horror injury in March 2021, Albert Vallci is also likely to face a departure despite a squad comeback in May 2022. The 27-year-old is only the third force behind Ignace van der Brempt and Amar Dedic. However, Salzburg does not currently have a specific customer for the defender.
The third in the group is 23-year-old Antoine Bernede. Coming from the academy of Paris Saint-Germain, the two-time France international has enjoyed a very good education, but could find it difficult to get satisfactory playing minutes in the 2022/23 season due to the overstaffed “bulls” midfield.
“Bulls” have already sold three top performers
The 16-time Bundesliga champion has already had to accept well-known departures during this transfer period. All Salzburg transfers at a glance >>>
Brenden Aaronson has joined Leeds United for a fee of €32.84m, while Rasmus Kristensen did the same for €13m. Karim Adeyemi has already found his new home at Borussia Dortmund as a Haaland replacement.
Zlatko Junuzovic, on the other hand, ended his career in the dress of the “Bulls”.
Freund: “The quality of the squad is very high”
Not least because of this and because of the intensive workload in autumn Salzburg broadly based. “The squad is largely in place, it’s still on the larger side. All positions are filled at least twice, there’s competition. We’re happy when we’re in a very good position in terms of depth and quality. We’ll definitely be need,” says Freund.
Because the goals of the club, which is firmly in the Champions League group stage, are high as always, emphasized the sporting director. “First and foremost we want to start well in the championship, then we’ll work our way forward step by step. If possible, we want the tenth title in a row. For that you need to start well and deliver good games,” explains Freund.
But hat Salzburg not only recruited talent from their own respected European youth and brought back players on loan, but also hired Lucas Gourna-Douath, captain of the French U19s, Brazilian striker Fernando (23) and Serbian central defender Strahinja Pavlovic (21). “The quality of the squad is very high. It’s a really good squad, both in terms of breadth and at the top,” says Jaissle happily.
Jaissle fuels competition
“The upheaval was there again, some deserving players and leaders have left us. Like every summer, this is a great opportunity for the boys who move up to develop themselves. They have it in their own hands, I’m even more tormented of the election”, coach Matthias Jaissle fuels the competition. For this he maintains an open exchange, the players “know what they are about”.
