Heat wave in Salzburg: How the animals in the zoo master the summer heat
The summer temperatures not only cause problems for people, but also for animals. The zoo animals have a secret recipe ready when it’s hot: they simply shift down a gear or two.
SALZBURG: “Higher, faster, further” is the motto the white-handed gibbons live by, but as soon as the temperatures hit the 30-degree mark, the little apes in the Salzburg zoo shift down a gear or two. And so gibbon lady Maya enjoys the current heat in her favorite branch fork and takes a break.
You can’t say whether neighbor Muki watched Maya do this trick, but he does the same. The red panda, whose enclosure is located right next to the outdoor area of the white-handed gibbons and which he lives in with his partner Xia, takes a siesta under the shady forest of leaves.
“Sometimes we can actually learn something from the animals, so here’s our ultimate tip for hot days: do like Maya” Zoo manager Sabine Grebner
And if you watch the two flatland tapirs Nola and Miguel, you might want to jump into the water too. Because the mammals from South America cool off in animal swimming pools.
Are the hot temperatures stressful for you?
