Gold, silver and bronze for Portugal in the Virtus European Championships
After yesterday’s silver rain, Portugal ended today the second round of the VIRTUS European Championships, with a gold, a silver and a bronze medal.
Lenine Cunha, who yesterday won the triple jump, returned today to the highest place on the podium, in the heptathlon, a race he completed with 2198 points. Inês Fernandes also returned to the podium, with second place in the hammer throw, with 36.98 meters, similar to what she achieved yesterday at weight.
The bronze medal was won by Cristiano Silva Pereira, in the 3000 meters obstacles, with the mark of 11m43.71s.
Joana Silva, who today turned 50 silver in the 50 meters, classed in the 400 meters. Igor Oliveira made it to the final of the 200 meters, with the best mark of the heats, of 22.32s (v: -1.1m/s).
With this performance, the Portuguese team is collectively in second position, in men’s and women’s, just behind France. “We’re still halfway through, but this competition is going well, with many of us meeting our goals and others getting close to achieving them. We want to be champions of Europe collectively and that is what we are working towards. Personally, I’m looking for a qualification mark for the Paralympic Games, and it’s not easy, but he won’t give up”, said Lenine Cunha, captain of the Portuguese team, after this second round.
The team has a day of rest tomorrow, returning to action on Friday, July 23, starting at 10:00 (09:00 in Portugal).
