Gastro student is fobbed off with 200 € for 4 months – Salzburg
A 17-year-old earned only 50 euros a month for her internship in a restaurant. According to the boss, a “fair wage”. They complained, now he has to pay more.
No pleasure: Gastro student Tina B. recently completed her internship in a well-known Salzburg restaurant. There, the 17-year-old toiled in the kitchen for a full four months to the full satisfaction of customers and colleagues, and half of the time serving the delicious dishes. But when she asked her boss to pay her at the end of the internship, Tina had to swallow.

Her boss wanted to fob off the young woman with a mini-salary, only transferred her a meager 200 euros for four months of hard work to her account. This made the student angry: she immediately contacted the youth and apprentice counseling service of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor. When this knocked on her boss’s door, he refused to pay even a cent more.

The entrepreneur confirmed himself and claimed that the student’s payment was “fair”. The AK vehemently contradicted this. Because: For the payment of compulsory internships in the catering trade, wages in the amount of the apprentice compensation are due. When the man still didn’t want to pay, the AK sued him – Tina B. was right.
After a short process, she can now look forward to 3,400 euros. For the 17-year-old, however, this internship was not good advertising for a culinary career.
As recently came out, the hospitality industry holds a sad top position in the legal advice of the Chamber of Labour. “Those who find their way to us for advice show that the numerous labor law violations described are not isolated cases, but that the problems are symptomatic of the industry,” says Bianca Steppwieser from the AK, who does not want to that the grievances of the restaurant industry have fallen by the wayside.
