the City of Marseille launches a petition against the most polluting ships
“We are suffocating“, the message is clear from the City of Marseille. This Tuesday, the municipality publishes a petition on the City’s website to ask for a ban on the stopovers of the most polluting cruise ships, on days when pollution peaks. This text calls on the people of Marseille to mobilize against maritime pollution.
We”demand that international rules change and be much more protective of our seas and our cities“, writes the City of Marseilles which claims “strict and ambitious standards” to “protect the Mediterranean Sea and all the inhabitants who live on its coast“.
“In Marseille, we breathe pollution and we see it” – Ville de Marseille
One of the concrete actions requested by the City of Marseille is “the implementation of a stopover ban for the most polluting ships during pollution peaks“.
The government and international bodies are challenged
The text is translated in particular toInternational Maritime Organization (IMO) which will examine, on the scale of the whole Mediterranean, regulations to limit the emissions of suffering from boats. “We call on the IMO to expedite its decision on suffering broadcasts” is it written in the request.
The city of Marseille is also calling on the French government to launch “without delay” the negotiations with its counterparts in the Mediterranean on the nitrogen oxide emissions file. The Marseille majority carried away by its mayor Benoît Payan also calls for increased controls on ships cruising in the harbor of Marseille, “especially the largest, and those moored closest to homes”.
While the city is currently experiencing a new episode of pollution with high heat, “it is high time to act positively, and quickly“concludes the municipality.
