Euro 2022 | Lejoninnor | Spain | Germany | Austria | France | The Netherlands | Sweden | Belgium
The Euro 2022 quarter-finalists have been confirmed and, just like the weather, it’s starting to get really hot, with four sizzling final-eight matches to look forward to this week. Here’s everything you need to know …
England vs Spain
When: Wednesday, July 20
Where: Amex Stadium, Brighton
The Lions were in great shape in the group stage and scored a record 14 goals without an answer. But the favorites Spain before the tournament are without a doubt their biggest test so far and they have only lost one of their last 26 excursions. England left-back Demi Stokes may be in shape to return to this match, after missing the Northern Ireland match with a knee injury. Manager Sarina Wiegman can also return to the sidelines after missing the last group game due to Covid-19.
Last meeting: England 0-0 Spain (20/02/22)
Match statistics: England won 100% of their group stage matches for the second UEFA Women’s Euros in a row
Germany vs Austria
When: Thursday 21 July
Where: Brentford Community Stadium, Brentford
Germany will try to maintain their 100% record in Euro 2022 when they take on Austria on Thursday, after getting through the group stage. In the 2017 semi-finalists, Austria will be huge inferiors against Die Nationalelf, but there is quality within the team that can cause Germany problems – especially striker Nicole Billa who scored her 44th international goal against Norway.
Last meeting: Germany 3-1 Austria (06/10/18)
Match statistics: Germany won each of their three group games without conceding a single goal
Sweden vs Belgium
When: Friday, July 22nd
Where: Leigh Sports Village, Leigh
The Group C table tops Sweden are on familiar territory in the European Championship quarter-finals, after reaching the last eight stages in all 13 previous iterations of the tournaments. In stark contrast, opponents are Belgium in the knockout stage for the first time.
Last meeting: Belgium 1-4 Sweden (28/10/09)
Match statistics: Kosovar Asllani has recorded six assists in 12 matches during the last three UEFA Women’s Euros tournaments, twice as many as any other player.
France vs Netherlands
When: Saturday 23 July
Where: New York Stadium, Rotherham
These two giants have a history in the last eight, after meeting at this stage in 2009 when the Netherlands won through penalties after a goalless draw in Finland. Neither side has been beaten yet this time, although they have not kept a clean sheet either. This one has the potential for fireworks.
Last meeting: France 3-1 Netherlands (22/02/22)
Match statistics: France finished the group stage of the European Championship undefeated for the third time in a row
