Unterföhring, July 18, 2022 – The four-part Sky Original true-crime documentary “July 22 – Die Schüsse von München” (https://www.sky.de/serien/22-juli-die-schuesse-) illuminates from different perspectives von Munich) the background and motives of the Munich OEZ attack in 2016. Exclusive eyewitnesses to the events, experts from the police, forensics and medicine as well as journalists, extremism researchers and psychologists provide a comprehensive picture and new insights into the crime.
About “July 22 – The shots from Munich”:
An assassination attempt and endless questions. On July 22, an 18-year-old terrified the metropolis of Munich: he killed nine people at the Olympia shopping center and injured five others badly by gunshots, until shortly before he arrested himself. A few months and weeks earlier, the acts of terrorism in Paris and Nice had shaken the world and burned themselves into the collective memory, and so rumors quickly circulated on social networks, and shots were also reported in numerous other places in Munich – a diffuse fear of terrorism gripped the entire city. Until the police gave the all-clear well after midnight, when it became apparent that the alleged terrorist attack by several participants was the act of a single young person.
The perpetrator is dead – but many questions remain. As it turned out after long investigations, the 18-year-old’s act was racially motivated – but how did the son of Iranian immigrants discover such deep-rooted hatred? How did the student get a gun? What role did his fascination with first-person shooters play? What about his communication via the Steam gaming platform, through which he was in contact with like-minded people such as the American William Atchinson, who himself committed a school attack in Aztec / New Mexico a year later? And what is the significance of their shared worship of Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik?
“July 22 – The Shots from Munich” approaches these questions from different angles and goes far beyond a chronological account of the events. The four-part Sky Original True Crime documentary focuses on new insights into the motives and background of the crime. Illuminated in cinematic images “22. July – The shots from Munich” the assassination from the perspectives of the helpers on site, the investigators, the media, politicians and last but not least the environment of the assassin and the survivors of the victims. Marcus da Gloria Martins (former press spokesman for the Munich police), Peter Langman (expert on “school shootings”), Miro Dittrich (right-wing extremism researcher), Claudia Neher (victim lawyer), Ludwig Waldinger (press spokesman for the LKA Bayern) have their say ), David Mühlberger (lawyer for the arms dealer), Christian Bergmann (investigative journalist) and Claudia Stamm (politician). The renowned author and editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Martin Bernstein, together with the experts and appraisers involved, also gives an insight into the processing of the crime.
The Sky Original Documentation is a production of the Constantin Documentation in cooperation with the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Producers are Jochen M. Köstler and Jan Klophaus, directed by the Student Academy Award Johannes Preuss. Executive producers alongside Sky are Christian Asanger and Nico Gammella.
Christian Asanger, Vice President Entertainment Sky Germany: “The OEZ assassination is one of the most shocking events in Germany in recent centuries and can be seen in a line with other right-wing extremist attacks around the world. Together with our production partner Constantin Documentation and in cooperation with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, we are showing the context and background of this terrible act in four episodes in a more comprehensive and detailed way than ever before. ’22. July – The shots from Munich’ is another milestone in our Sky Original strategy in the high-end documentation sector.”
Jochen M. Köstler, producer and managing director of Constantin Documentation: “If a documentary is ‘terrifyingly up-to-date’, then this shows once again how important it is to keep looking behind the scenes of a crime so that mere TERRIFIC gives way to knowledge. Ignorance is a danger that can be fought. This documentation provokes a look in the best sense. A look that makes looking away perhaps a little less possible.”
