Russian propaganda spreads stories about a possible nuclear war over Sweden, Finland’s accession to NATO
Russian propaganda intensified an information and psychological campaign aimed at Western audiences against NATO expansion, in particular by circulating the story of the likelihood of a nuclear war as a result of Sweden and Finland joining the alliance.
It’s according to Center to counter disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, reports Ukrinform.
Statements by some US politicians claiming the possibility of a nuclear war, which could lead to NATO expansion, appeared in a number of foreign media at the same time.
On July 14, US Senator Rand Paul, known for his stories that resonated with Russian propaganda, expressed his fear of a possible escalation of Russia’s military activities on the European continent and called on NATO not to accept post-Soviet nations into the Alliance.
On the same day, another American politician, Patrick Buchanan, who analyzed Finland’s and Sweden’s movement against NATO, called such actions a meaningless and risky provocation on the part of the Alliance against a nuclear power, that is, Russia.
“Attempts to intimidate the world with a nuclear war on the part of the Russian Federation have not ceased since February 24, 2022. Statements about the potential escalation of the military conflict are manipulation and an element of Russian information terror,” the watchdog stressed.
As reported by Ukrinform, Russian propaganda and some foreign media are spreading a false story about a division in NATO regarding the attitude to the war in Ukraine.
