Ice hockey – ICE: Andrew MacWilliam strengthens EC Red Bull Salzburg – winter sports
Andrew MacWilliam is moving from Munich to Salzburg within the Red Bull organization.
The 32-year-old defender has played for the DEL team for the past two years, scoring two goals and 16 assists in 75 games. Munich was the Canadian’s only European stop so far.
“In recent years I’ve often spoken to selected players from Salzburg. They have only spoken positively about the organization and the city. When the opportunity arose for me to go to Salzburg, I was very happy and gladly accepted it.” , says MacWilliam of his move.
MacWilliam already knows many players
Quite a few current players in the Salzburg ranks will quickly make him feel at home. “I played with Thomas Raffl for the Manitoba Moose (2015/16). I played defensive end with Chay Genoway in college and we’ve remained friends ever since. I’ve also played with Ty Loney in North America played and I’ve also run into Tyler Lewington and Dennis Robertson in recent years.
The veteran is clear about his goal: “Last season was very successful for Salzburg. I want to help defend the title and expand the ‘winning tradition’ that Salzburg already has.”
MacWilliam relies on his qualities: “I’m a tough defender in my own zone. I want to be a player my opponents don’t want to play against. And over the years I’ve always honed my offensive skills.”
McIlvane is excited about the new addition
Salzburg’s head coach Matt McIlvane says of the new defender: “We wanted a player who was physically present. I think Andrew is one of the toughest defenders I’ve seen play. Another big plus is that he has played in Munich for the last two years. He also stays in the family and knows the system we play with. He also brings excellent leadership qualities.”
Before his first European engagement, the defenseman played for four different clubs in the AHL for seven years and also made 12 NHL appearances with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In total, he played 431 AHL games from 2013 to 2020 and quickly worked consistently as an assistant captain.
In his last NCAA year at the University of North Dakota (2012/13), he even captained his team on the ice.
