40 cigarette bin disposal units have been installed on sandy beaches around Malta and Gozo.
Boot bins are being installed as part of the Save Our Blue Campaign which aims to raise protection on environmental protection.
Through these installations, the public is being encouraged more to refrain from illegally dumping cigarette butts on beaches.
According to a 2021 survey by the ministry of the environment, it found that 98.1% of individuals in Malta who smoke are aware of the fact that dumping in the environment is illegal, while 11% of smokers admit that they still throw the cigarette butt to the floor.
During several cleanups organized as part of Our Saving Blue Campaign over the years, it became clear that cigarette butts are among the most garbage collected from beaches. Cigarette butts fall into the one-time plastic category because they are made of plastic. They take 10 years to disintegrate.
In Malta, 25 containers have been installed in: Armier, Lake, Golden Bay, Apple Eye, Garden, Little Armier, Paradise Bay, Pretty Bay, St. George’s Bay, and White Tower Bay. 15 containers have been installed in Gozo and Comino: Blue Lagoon and Santa Marija Bay, Daħlet Qorrot, Hondoq ir-Rummein, Marsalforn, Mġarr ix-Xini, Ramla l-Ħamra, San Blas, Xlendi and Xwejni.
