Paolo Rondelli – former Boniface VIII International Award and member of the Bonifaciana Academy – elected Regent Captain of the Republic of San Marino
Another Head of State is the Bonifacio VIII International Prize. This is the Honorable Paolo Rondelli, born in 1963, a politician and diplomat from San Marino, who has held the position of Regent Captain of the Republic of San Marino since 1 April 2022, together with Oscar Mina.
His Excellency Rondelli, at the time Ambassador of the Republic of San Marino to the United States of America, was in Anagni on 12 December 2014, a guest of the Accademia Bonifaciana, when Cardinal Vicar Agostino Vallini, for the opening of the Bonifacio academic year and for the XII edition of the national and international Bonifacio VIII prize. They received with him, the coveted sculpture by Ambrosetti, among others, the Hon. Domenico Rossi Undersecretary of State for Defense, the Hon. Arben Ahmetaj, Minister of Economic Development of the Republic of Albania; The. Anna Zaborska, President of the Commission for Women’s Rights and Equality in the European Parliament; The. Ten. Col. Gianfranco Paglia, Gold Medal for Military Valor. A respectable parterre, as indeed were the previous and subsequent editions, this year now in its twentieth.
“A great satisfaction – declared the Rector President Sante De Angelis – to count among our members and honored, our Academic Senator and member of the Scientific Committee, Paolo Rondelli, appointed to this office on 5 November 2014, former Ambassador, who became in meanwhile Head of State of the Republic of San Marino. It will be an honor, now to host him again as Captain Regent of San Marino, in this year in which the Boniface VIII Award blows out twenty candles, even if the multiplicity of Institutional commitments in this semester which will hold the highest position in San Marino, it will make the enterprise more difficult, but we remain confident and above all we are gratified by his friendship, his esteem and his affection for our institution ”.
Rondelli, we recall, studied chemical engineering at the University of Bologna and graduated in 1990 with a thesis on “Risks associated with the transport of toxic substances”. In 1994 and 1995 he studied environmental sciences and technologies, also at the University of Bologna. In May 2010 Rondelli obtained a Masters in Journalism at the Universities of Urbino and Tor Vergata in Rome. In the same year Rondelli graduated from the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy of the University of Bologna with a thesis entitled “Democracies in transition: the state of young and old, legacy of the future”.
As an engineer, Rondelli has been involved in environmental and sustainable development issues, working as a junior engineer for the SOL SpA Group in Italy from March 1989 to March 1990 and then as a junior engineer for the ENI Group from May 1991 to July 1993. In 1993 he joined the San Marino administration, initially as an expert in technology and environment at the Social Security Institute, where he worked from July 1993 November 1998. Subsequently he was transferred to the Department of Territory, Environment and, where he then took on the function of Department Coordinator (now Department Director) remaining there until October 2003.
From October 1998 Rondelli was appointed chairman of the board of directors of the Autonomous Production Company, holding this position until November 2003. He then became Head of the Prevention and Protection Service for all the Public Administration and the autonomous entities connected to it. He retains this position until January 2012 apart from the period from April 2005 to August 2006, during which he is called to cover the role of Head of the Department of Foreign and Political Affairs, Economic Planning and Justice of the Republic of San Marino with also functions as Head of Cabinet of the Minister. In the three-year period 2012-2014 he collaborated with the General Management of the Autonomous State Company for Public Services, the multi-utility of the Republic of San Marino, in January 2015, following a public competition, he assumed the position of Director of the newly established Cultural Institutes, Operational of the San Marino administration within which the State Archives, State Library, State Museums and Monuments, Performing Arts, San Marino Theater Unit are located under his direction. After a break, spent as Head of Internal and External Communication of the General Direction of the Public Function, he returns to the general direction of the Cultural Institutes from 14 February 2022.
Rondelli presents to George W. Bush the instructions of ambassador ambassador to the USA. Since April 2005 Rondelli has been a member of the San Marino delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. In this capacity he was a member of the election observation missions in Azerbaijan (October 2006 and December 2009), Moldova (December 2006, March 2007 and March 2008), Albania (February 2007), Kosovo (November 2007 and December 2008), Serbia ( January 2007 and May 2008), Armenia (September 2008 and June 2009), Israel (November 2008) and Macedonia (March 2009). Finally, in 2005 Rondelli joined the Steering Committee for Local and Regional Democracy and the Committee of Experts in Democratic Participation and Public Ethics at Local and Regional Level of the Council of Europe.
From October 2006 to May 2007 Rondelli was Special Representative of the President of the Committee of Ministers for Serbia and Montenegro in the Council of Europe and from April 2005 to May 2010 Rapporteur for the Committee for Sustainable Development. From 25 July 2007 to October 2016 he was San Marino Ambassador to the United States. Since 2019 he has been a member of the San Marino Parliament for him. Movimento Civico Rete. On 1 April 2022 he was elected Regent Captain, becoming the first head of state in the world to be declared LGBT. In the register of honor of the Bonifaciana Academy, the dedication of him on the occasion of his award ceremony is preserved: “A thought of friendship and affection for the Bonifaciana Academy of Anagni and for the honor he gave me by hosting me at the international award .
