Between Milan and Malpensa: a new cycle highway and a forest
A cycle highway between Malpensa airport and the city center and an urban forest in Cadorna: the “fili” project will change the face of Milan. It will be delivered for 2028.
54 kilometers. This is the distance covered by the future “cycling highway” linking Milan city center to Malpensa airport. The “fili” project, initiated by Ferrovie Nord Milano and the Lombardy Region, was stopped on Tuesday July 12 in Milan in Piazza Gae Aulenti.
The project does not consist in the simple installation of a cycle path but in a total redevelopment of the territory. Indeed, 41,000 hectares of vegetation will be planted all along the axis with the high point at Cadorna station. The station will house a suspended forest, a green roof above the cycle path and a pedestrian area. A way for the city to create a natural space to absorb more CO2 and “clean up” the air of Milan. Some 24 municipalities will be affected by this revegetation with several major locations such as the stations of Bovisa, Saronno and Busto Arsizio.
The region has released 120 million euros to catch up with other major cities in Europe with this program. In four years, the capital will be exposed to the eyes of the whole world with the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cadorna. This road is therefore a strategic location in the representation of the region.
Pedal on the next bike path, in virtual reality
A stand was set up to present the development idea to the inhabitants. A bicycle with a virtual reality helmet is made available to offer users the possibility of pedaling on the next cycle path. After his fictitious ride, the tester receives a “fili ambassador” certificate. The attraction will remain in the square until July 18 and will then be moved to 15 other different locations up to Malpensa.
