Newfoundlander in Sweden for official launch of James Webb space telescope images
A Newfoundlander is in Sweden for the official launch of some of the first images released from the James Webb Space Telescope.
Bethany Downer, the European Space Agency’s Hubble Telescope Chief Communications Officer, says the James Webb Space Telescope complements the work on the Hubble Space Telescope, which was launched 32 years ago.
Some of the first images released reveal the breadth of the universe around us.
“If you’re impressed with the pictures out there now,” says Downer, “this is just the beginning.”
Downer says that James Webb not only focuses on Jupiter and some of the celestial bodies closer to home, but it also looks back in time to the origin of the universe.
She says they look back at some of the first stars and galaxies formed after the Big Bang. It helps them see how stars are born and how stars die. “The one that is talked about a lot,” says Downer, was the one revealed by US President Joe Biden with the first deep field image from James Webb.
