The mayor of Alvaiázere, João Guerreiro, said today that several houses burned and that several locations had to be evacuated due to the fires that are ongoing in this municipality in the district of Leiria.

“Some houses burned and several locations were evacuated,” João Guerreiro told Lusa news agency, stressing the fact that there were no reports of injuries.
According to the situation in the municipality, around 19.30, “very complicated”, due to the activations of the fire that started on Thursday, in the municipality of Ourém, district of Santarém, which was recognizable “with great force”.
“As there are other fires in the region, we are not given more resources”, lamented the mayor of Alvaiázere, with two fires in the municipality, in Pelmá and Almoster.
To the population, João Guerreiro assured that everything within reach is being done and asked them to “take the predetermined steps so that there are no more fires and to be safe”.
This fire in Alvaiázere started on Thursday afternoon in the Union of Parishes of Freixianda, Ribeira do Fárrio and Formigais and also spread to Ferreira do Zêzere, in the district of Santarém.

“I’m on IC8 and I’ve seen houses being destroyed by the flames. There are no firefighters. It’s not their fault, they are tireless, but there are no human or material resources. There are no more auto-tanks”, said Pedro Pimpão on Friday, who spoke to Lusa about a fire that has been taking care of since the municipality and that today rekindled with intensity.
The social-democratic mayor stressed that the population is experiencing “moments of distress” and that it has already been necessary “to evacuate houses and families at risk”, as well as a home in Ramalhais, in the parish of Abiul.
Pedro Pimpão laments the lack of resources to fight the fire: “We are with children whose lives are at risk. It’s a desperate situation. It’s totally out of control,” he added.
The president also mentioned that in the IC8 area, in Pombal, where he was at 19:00, it was “all dark” due to the smoke, which made the situation more distressing.
The Pombal fire broke out on Friday, at 2:50 pm, in the parish of Abiul, and reignited today.
According to the website of the National Civil Emergency Authority, at 19:12, 217 were on the operational ground, protected by 58 vehicles and an air vehicle.
