The summer holidays have started. For many parents, a challenging time begins when school and kindergarten are closed. The same goes for Ukrainian families. For them there is now a six-week program for children and young people.
A good 80 Ukrainian children will be cared for by several clubs over the next six weeks. The campaign came about so that children dying in the refugee shelters would not be bored. German is on the timetable in the morning, then we do sports.
17-year-old Nadia has this to say about the holiday programme: “I really like it here. The nature here is very beautiful and the people are very nice. For me, it’s an unforgettable summer holiday.” 14-year-old Vlahd adds: “I think it’s a very good program for us Ukrainian children, because just sitting at home isn’t interesting.”
Registration costs eight euros
It costs eight euros to register for the program – but then participation is free. The Ukraine Hilfe Salzburg initiative wants to use this to appeal to children and young people between the ages of 9 and 16. Wilhelm Höpflinger, founder of Ukraine Help Salzburg: “Those children and young people who die in a hotel are almost alone. If you visit such a hotel, then you realize that this sadness and mood prevail there. Even if helpers try very hard and make offers – little or no acceptance is given by the 12 to 16-year-olds.”
German is played playfully
So that the children don’t lose their knowledge of German over the holidays, everything is repeated again in the German lessons – German should be repeated in a playful way from walks and on the go throughout the state. Mariia Novokhatnia from Diakonie Salzburg: “It really makes a difference whether the children sit in the class and learn something or whether they learn the language in everyday life on the go.”
Overnight excursions planned
There are always supervisors who speak both German and Ukrainian – excursions with overnight stays are also planned. Susanne Kollek- Regelsberger – on the board of the Alpine Association – wants to show the children and young people the Tennengebirge: “It’s about how to move on the hiking trail and what equipment is needed for it.” Volunteers are still being sought to support the project.
