Dominant lineage in Portugal has a new symptom that manifests itself at night
An immunologist warns that the new strain of Covid-19 – which is already dominant in Portugal – BA-5, can cause different symptoms – including an overnight outbreak.
BA.5 is a highly contagious subvariant of Ómicron that causes concern as it contributes to a new wave of infections in the world, including in Portugal, where it accounts for 9.6% of infections.
The differences found with previous scientists’ estimates, including the ability to reinfect people for weeks against Covid-19. An important immunological symptomatology now may be a new symptomatology of this lineage.
“An extra symptom of BA.5 I saw this morning is night sweats,” Luke O’Neill, a professor at Trinity College Dublin, told Irish radio station Newstalk. “Isn’t it strange?” he added.
According to the official, “the disease is a little different because the virus has changed” and “there are Immunity to that – obviously with the T cells and so on – and this mixing of the immune system with the different little virus, can give rise to a different judgment disease, with sweats nocturnal to be a feature“.
“But very importantly, to have been vaccinated and to have taken the booster, the infection does not progress to a serious illness and this is the message to continue to remind people”, he warned.
