Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead on Friday during a campaign event in western Japan. When he was taken to hospital urgently, he was confirmed dead.
The senior official of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said former Prime Minister Abe took his last breath at a hospital in the city of Kashihara, in the Nara region, where he was admitted for medical treatment.
A Japanese spokesman said a 41-year-old man had been arrested. According to local media, the suspect had served in the Japanese fleet and left the Japan Self-Defense Force in 2005; the suspect confessed to the shooting that he was unhappy with Abe and intended to kill him.
The sudden shooting attack has created shock across the country containing the world’s strictest gun control laws. Allegedly, the shooter used a homemade gun.
People at the scene of the crime reported hearing two consecutive bangs during Abe’s speech. The Abe was shot from behind and hit in the neck and chest.
Abe fell on the street, surrounded by several security guards. He was holding his chest with a blood-stained shirt.
“He was giving a speech, and a man came from behind,” informed a woman on the spot.
“The first shot was like a toy. It didn’t fall, and there was a big bang. The second shot was more visible, and I could see the spark and the smoke, ”she added.
According to media reports, Abe was taken to hospital and appeared to be in cardo-respiratory arrest. Police later raided the man’s home, who was arrested for the shooting.
