Calvet (Port of Barcelona) is committed to “electrifying the docks” before 2026
The project has an investment of 110 million euros
BARCELONA, July 9. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The president of the Port of Barcelona, Damià Calvet, has defended the creation of “a complete, intelligent and flexible network to be able to electrify the docks” and allow ships to connect to an electrical network, within the ‘Nexigen’ project that will promote the port with an investment of 110 million euros.
He explained this in an interview with ‘Cope Catalunya i Andorra’ collected this Saturday by Europa Press, in which he assured that “in 2026 all cruise ships that arrive at the Adosado Dock should be able to plug in”, to decarbonize port activity and reduce to zero emissions at the port.
Regarding the limitation of cruise ships proposed by the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, he has stated that he is “open to dialogue with Colau but with data on the table”, and has pointed out that the economic impact generated by cruise tourism is very important to the city.
Calvet has acknowledged that cruise ships can cause
harmful, such as “a certain feeling of overcrowding in some areas”, but has denied that they cause other negative impacts and has defended that, according to the Barcelona Regional agency, cruise ships generate less than 1% of the particles that affect air quality.
Regarding the cultural projection of the port, he said that “it is very suggestive that a port has cultural uses that vindicate the maritime tradition of the city” and, along these lines, he regretted that the Hermitage Museum project did not go ahead.
But he has celebrated the commitment to the Liceu Mar in the Imax space: “The Liceu needs a second venue that provides added value, with young creators, foreign artists and new formats.”
