Strong increase in Covid cases in Switzerland this week
According to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), 46,025 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Switzerland in the 7 days up to July 4, 2022, 39% more than in the previous 7 days. In addition, 455 people were hospitalized, a number 52% higher than the week before. And 13 patients died. 45 intensive care beds were occupied by Covid-19 patients, which is about 6% of the total.
The currently dominant Covid-19 variant is B.1.1.529 – Omicron, which accounts for 100% of infections. Despite rising cases, the BAG said the epidemiological situation was under control despite the rise in cases, reported RTS.
The parts of Switzerland with the highest infection rates can now be identified through wastewater surveys. Parts of Geneva, Schwytz, Grindelwald and Locarno have particularly high levels of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in their wastewater. Additionally, Viral loads in wastewater have increased significantly in the last 7 days in the same locations,
The government plans to offer a fourth vaccination (second booster) to anyone over 80 or who is immunocompromised. However, the BAG and a government commission dealing with it recommend waiting until autumn before the rest of the population is vaccinated with a second booster vaccination.
