City of Salzburg – colorful zebra crossings daubed
Unknown perpetrators smeared the new colorful zebra crossings in Liefering on Friday night.
The municipal building department will rectify this act of vandalism as soon as possible and file a complaint against unknown persons. The police have been informed of the incident and are asking the public for information.
City Councilor Martin Berthold on this: “The nightly smear campaign shows that there are still people who cannot stand diversity and apparently want to live in a monotonous world. As a city of human rights, we never tire of campaigning for non-discriminatory and equal coexistence in our city.”
Angelika Koeppenwallner, the director of MS Liefering, shows her dismay: “I am dismayed that on the doorstep of our human rights school, human and children’s rights are obviously not being lived out the way the children and we all would like them to. For me, the campaign is a call to continue working to educate people – especially in our environment – to point out human rights and set an example for inclusion!
Also Connie Felice from HOSI Salzburg is concerned: “Such a vandal act must not be downplayed. The zebra crossings are colorful symbols that stand for freedom and cohesion. We must protect them together. As HOSI, we always rely on dialogue and will always seek it. Even if individuals do not want to accept it!”
