‘Football Clubs Should Be Represented With Role Model,’ Says PN MP
Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s path to a great job on the Maltese football scene has been welcomed in a mixed way, nothing more than by PN sports spokesman Graham Bencini.
While on Facebook, Bencini wrote that “for the sake of sport, the Malta Association of Professional Football Clubs (MPFCA) should be chaired by a model and not by a well-deserved former Prime Minister.”
The statement came later Times of Malta reported that the country’s top football teams approached Muscat and proposed to become the head of the body representing them.
Indeed, the role sees Muscat as the next chairman of the MPFCA, his first public appointment following his resignation as country’s leader in 2019.
Speaking to Lovin Malta, Bencini said that the role should be played by “a man who is independent of politics,” and that doing so would be the best way to “avoid controversy.”
“Sport is one of the few things that unites us in this country. Joseph Muscat’s presidency of a body representing the country’s top sports clubs will surely divide the sports community to the detriment of the sport itself. “
Muscat’s resignation comes after the 2019 political crisis following the arrest of Yorgen Fenech and the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The MPFCA is an autonomous body formed by Maltese football clubs last year and was designed to represent the interests of professional football clubs in Malta. The association is made up of the country’s 12 Premier League presidents.
He is currently chaired by Robert Micallef, president of Santa Lucia FC, who is holding the post on an interim basis.
Do you think Muscat is the right man to represent Malta’s football clubs?
