Political debate about low rent for golf course

The SPÖ is now demanding a significantly higher lease for the “Golf & Country Club Schloss Klessheim”. The area of the golf course is leased from the state to the club – for a good 1,000 euros a month. State finance officer Christian Stöckl (ÖVP) points out that current contracts cannot be changed.
The Golf and Country Club Salzburg has to pay the state almost 13,000 euros per year to lease the property. There are also around 7000 euros for water charges and property tax. According to the head of the Salzburg SPÖ, David Egger, this lease is set far too low.
“A slap in the face for Salzburg”
“In our opinion, the ÖVP behaves in the country just like the Turkish ÖVP in the federal government. Because she judges herself and her friends. And in our opinion, a golf club that leases the state property here, including the clubhouse and swimming pool, for 12,000 euros and a little a year is a slap in the face for the people of Salzburg. That’s 1,000 euros a month. That’s why you can’t even get a three-room apartment in the city of Salzburg,” argues Egger.
With an estimated more than 600 members and a membership fee of around 1,500 euros per year, the income from membership fees of the golf club alone would amount to more than 900,000 euros, Egger calculates. A higher lease would therefore be manageable for the club.
Stöckl expects the lease to increase from 2025
The responsible financial officer Stöckl says that the state cannot intervene in current contracts. After the contract expires at the end of 2025, however, he expects a significant increase in the lease, Stöckl continues.
