A package worth millions for modern train stations in Salzburg
More modern, more convenient when changing trains, barrier-free: ÖBB, the federal government and the state are currently rolling out major expansion plans at 34 of Salzburg’s 59 train stations.
“We already have attractive ticket offers. However, there is still a lot of catching up to do in terms of infrastructure in Salzburg,” said Salzburg’s Transport Councilor Stefan Schnöll (ÖVP), welcoming the fact that a long-term agreement could be concluded with the Federal Railways for the first time.
ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä added at the presentation on Monday: “With our investments, we are preparing the railway system for the increasing mobility needs of the people of Salzburg.”
The focus of the 200 million package are the stations on the West (Strasswalchen to Eugendorf), Tauern (Elsbethen to Bad Gastein) and Ennstal line (Pöham to Mandling). Around 30 million euros are to flow into the Gastein Valley alone, and 20 million euros into Radstadt. On the Tauernbahn line, efforts are also being made to shorten the cycle times, according to Schnöll.
Three new stops
With Seekirchen-Süd, Schüttdorf (Zell am See) and Hüttau-Ort, three stops will be completely rebuilt. Investments are also being made in even more safety: modern underpasses are to replace a further seven accident-prone level crossings.
The train stations are to be upgraded to become the mobility hubs of the future. This also makes a broad expansion of the Park & Ride areas necessary. According to the Transport Provincial Councilor Schnöll, 1,200 additional parking spaces are planned. Modern bike racks and boxes including charging facilities and parking spaces for scooters are also part of the future concept at the train stations. The connection with bicycle traffic and paths that are feasible on foot should also be better in the future.
The expansion of the high-speed route between Köstendorf and Salzburg-Kasern is still on hold, and local transport should also benefit from this.
