San Marino steals a chocolate egg and then sends an apology letter “I know I was wrong”
A story that is unbelievable. A registered mail that crosses the border between Switzerland and Italy. Destination: the grocery store of Danilo Chiaruzzi in the center of San Marino. But what is most surprising is the content of the letter, or the confession of the theft of a Kinder seat written in his own hand by Benjamin, a 12-year-old Swiss child. “My name is Benjamin, I stole a chocolate egg from his shop. I am very sorry, so I was wrong, here is 10 euros. I hope you can forgive me “. Like many other traders, Chiaruzzi is used to occasionally a few small thefts, but he has never received the confession of a repentance, of which he was pleasantly surprised.
The confession
“Sunday, May 30th, I went into his shop. Since I had no money I stole a Joy Kinder seat. I’m very sorry, and so I was wrong. Because I want to live in peace with God and with her, I enclose 10 euros to be forgiven … “. Who knows how much that little boy suffered, eaten with guilt for the whole trip back from a school trip to San Marino to his motherland. All the fault of that inviting egg which he could not resist. It is known that chocolate is tempting for young and old. A bit like Paul de Reynaud, the mayor and caretaker in the ‘Chocolate’ movie. But confessing the crime is not for everyone. Poor Benjamin, back home, maybe he will be open with his parents, confessing that little secret. And probably at that point he will write to Mr. Chiaruzzi, attaching a 10 euro bank note to the letter. Maybe his pocket money?
“Children who steal for fun or as a challenge should read it”
The owner of the grocery store was very surprised by the gesture of the child. “I was flabbergasted and this many guys read it that every day, for fun or challenge, they steal potato chips, candy or other – comments Chiaruzzi -. He will answer him with a postcard to which I will add a typical San Marino cake and an invitation to come back and visit us to shake his hand. I will certainly not forget the gesture he made! “. The letter shared on Facebook in a few hours went viral. The little story of a petty theft hit the heart of the community. “A letter that is good for the heart “, someone wrote; “Beautiful gesture”, another. And a teacher: “There are still good people. I will tell it to my students, it is a wonderful example “.
