Brazil sees potential for growth in energy cooperation with Portugal
In an interview with Lusa at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasília, Kenneth Nóbrega chose an area of renewable energy as the one that has the most growth potential between the two countries.
“In the area of energy, where Portugal, as a country and as a member of the European Union, can intensify cooperation in the production of renewable energies”, defended the Brazilian official, adding that a European energy transition to meet the decarbonization goals, “enhanced by the conflict in Ukraine, the search for energy has become even more urgent”.
“One of the most promising areas of the bilateral relationship is in the area of energy, where Portugal and Brazil can intensify”, he reinforced.
Kenneth Nóbrega underlined with Portugal, it already exists with Portugal, of investments, very thriving and as investment prospects for Galp and EDP’s relationship in renewable energy in Brazil are very promising, largely entrepreneurial in são verde.
The Brazilian secretary even though recently the country has considered the matter and the interpretation for the production of `offshore` energy and a bilateral cooperation in this can be reinforced.
In early May, Galu the purchase, the third maturity, of a portfolio of renewable energies so far and gas from Brazil, agreed in October the acquisition of two portfolios of solar under development in the states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul. Norte to SER Energia, with capacities of 282 MW and 312 MW, respectively.
EDP, with a strong presence in the South American giant, has secured a contract for the sale of renewable energy in São Paulo, Brazil, with a capacity of 254 megawatts (MW), which should start operating in 2024.
In Brazil, EDP recorded profits of around 100.5 million euros in the first quarter of 2022.
“Portugal is already a very old partner in the energy area, it already knows the Brazilian environment, it knows the laws very well, knowing the perspectives of technological cooperation”, knowing this, reinforced Kenneth Nóbrega.
In a year in which Brazil celebrates its bicentennial of independence, the Brazilian secretary recalls as singularities of the fraternal relationship between the two countries, which, among others, allows the colonizing country to participate in the celebrations of the colonized country.
“There is a very dense relationship for many years, a constant flow of high-level contacts”, he said, noting that the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will travel to the country between the 1st and 05th of July and will also be present at the on September 8, at the Congress, for a solemn session to commemorate the 200th anniversary of independence.
“A mutual patrimony of trust was created that helps a lot to design new avenues of cooperation”, he concluded.
