Letter to the editor – Draft horses in the training stable!
In the June 15 edition of “Fatherland”, the article “Good teachers’ wages, few staff worries” deals with the problem of the shortage of teachers. Although there is now talk of a “desperate situation” in Switzerland, Liechtenstein is fortunate to “draw from the pool of three countries – Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Austria and partly also Germany”. One sees “[…] no shortage of teachers in Liechtenstein at the moment». This conclusion is surprising in many ways. On the one hand, because in Germany it has been neglected for decades to keep the teaching profession attractive for prospective students, especially in the area of secondary level I. Accordingly, one is more dependent on others than ever; above all from those neighboring countries that are already suffering from a constantly increasing shortage of teachers and are in some cases discussing reducing the requirements in teacher training – so there can be no question of far-sightedness. There are still a few ponies in the training stable, and the draft horses are still missing. The shortage of capable teaching staff continues to worsen. Action must be taken now! On the other hand, quality does not seem to be a decisive factor in recruitment. the unprecedented transformation on the labor market, the enormous social tasks and the increasing social challenges that Liechtenstein schools are also confronted with, negligent behavior. In the 21st century, it is no longer enough to set positions in the classroom so that children and young people can simply be supervised. Education is our only required resource. There is an urgent need for competent and committed teaching staff who share responsibility for the future of this country – not wage earners. The best of the best teachers should support the weakest students in particular. When are we going to start talking about quality in education?
