GTS Logistics prepares entry into Portugal
The Portuguese freight transport market may soon have another domestic player, with the arrival of GTS Logistics.
The Italian GTS Logistics intends to create GTS Iberia by the end of the year to start making trains in Spain and also in Portugal.
In Iberia, GTS Logistics will be its headquarters, a choice, moreover, will be an industry one of the main targets of the Peninsula’s offer that is justified in Italian Tarragona. The other chosen sector is a food industry. In both, the operator already has strong customers.
But the new company does not intend to focus exclusively on the region of Tarragona, not even on Spain. The idea is to take trucks off the road and go where there is business, which includes Portugal and in particular Porto, as the company’s director for Portugal and Spain told “El Mercantil”.
Interestingly, Sergi Gómez Casas became commercial director of Ibercargo Rail, a 50-50 joint venture created between Takargo and Comsa for the Iberian market.
The now country manager of GTS Iberia highlights that there is still a long way to go to increase the railroad’s share of freight, both within the Peninsula and in connections beyond the Pyrenees.
GTS Logística is an Italian company, based in Bari, founded in 1977. In the field of rail transport, it operates with its own fleet of 28 wagons and containers. Just a few days ago, it announced an investment of 74 million euros in the purchase of another 20 Alstom TRAXX DC3-494 locomotives.
