Giant dachshund in Munich: prelude to the city founding festival
A giant dachshund was set up on Marienplatz on Friday: four and a half meters long, three meters high and colorful rings around the stomach. It is a modern modification of the “Olympia-Waldi”, which was the mascot of the 1972 Summer Games.
Attunement to the city founding festival
As an “eye-catcher” in front of the tourist information in the town hall, the dachshund should now draw attention to the Olympic anniversary and get in the mood for the city founding festival on Sunday, which is all about the “Spirit of 72”, as the city announces.
Construction with a crane
The giant dachshund, weighing between 400 and 500 kilos, was placed on a plinth in front of the town hall on Friday morning with a crane. The figure is black and white striped and has colorful stripes in blue, green and yellow around the belly. The city will thus celebrate the city’s birthday on Sunday and at the same time commemorate the Olympic Games 50 years ago.
The giant dachshund was built by a company from Landshut that specializes in 3D constructions. They have already built the Munich Kindl, lettering for the European Football Championship or oversized hashtags for the EU Commission, which stand for nuns from Helsinki to Spain, according to boss Roland Rechinger.
A long dog made of wood and steel
The dachshund is made of wood and has a steel substructure, which took four weeks to build. It’s all the nicer now when he’s finally standing: “That’s always the highlight of the whole job. When you do something like that, it’s not everyday, you have a certain farmer’s pride,” says Rechinger.
Hashtag: #simplymunich
As soon as the dachshund is screwed on, the first photos are taken. “To the delight of the city of Munich, die that the dachshund is establishing itself as a selfie hotspot,” says spokesman Wolfgang Nickl. The city expects as many people as possible to take photos with the dachshund, and then their pictures with the hashtag #simplymunich share on social media and thus draw attention to Munich worldwide.
Shade dispenser in 3D – made in Landshut
The bases of the statue also seem to be used as seating. The big dachshund casts a pleasant shadow in this heat. The 3D figure should be on Marienplatz until the end of August.
