Portugal among the best in the Global Peace Index
Portugal dropped one position in the 2022 Global Peace Index, to sixth place among 163 countries, due to an increase in crime and political instability, according to the report by the Institute of Economy and Peace (IEP).
Iceland and New Zealand maintain the top two places, followed by Ireland, which rose, and three countries, overtaking Portugal. Austria also improved to 5th position.
IEP founder and director Steve Killa downplayed Portugal’s descent, qualifying it as “an increase in arrest rates, an increase in murder rates, an increase in political instability and an increase in perceptions of criminality”.
Afghanistan is the least peaceful country in the world for the fifth year in a row, followed by Yemen, Syria, Russia and South Sudan, countries that have been in the top ten in recent years.
