August is the most popular month for weddings in Slovenia
registered official civil associations. August was the most popular month for a wedding, according to the Bureau of Statistics.
Compared to the previous year, the number of married couples increased by 13% to 5,916, while the number of divorced couples increased by almost a third (31%) to 2,322.
Most couples got married in Gorenjska and central Slovenia (three per 1000 inhabitants), and the least in the Goriška region in the west (two per 1000).
Most couples committed on August 21; as many as 209, which is compared to 16 on average. August was also the only month in which more than a thousand couples married (1030).
July, June and September are also very popular for a wedding, compared to January, which is the least popular, with only 149 couples choosing a month for their wedding.
Saturday is the most popular wedding day of the week, with 59% of all couples getting married on that day last year.
Grooms were on average 36.8 years old and brides 34.3 years old, while those who married for the first time were slightly younger, 32.6 and 30.7 years old, respectively.
For 89% of brides and just as many grooms, this was their first marriage, and for 82% of all couples, it was their first marriage.
In 78% of marriages, both the bride and groom were Slovenian citizens; in 9% the bride was a foreigner and in almost as many the groom came from abroad. In both cases, the foreign partner came mostly from Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 4% of cases, both couples were foreign nationals.
Same-sex civil unions were registered by 58 couples, of which 31 were men and 27 were women.
Of the couples who divorced last year, 53% had 1999 dependent children. Most children were assigned to mothers (59%), 6% to fathers and 32% to both.
