World’s oldest allies, Portugal and the United Kingdom prepare political-Brexit deal
The prime ministers of the United Kingdom and Portugal are preparing to close on Monday, in London, a global political agreement for Portuguese-British bilateral relations after the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union.
“A hat is being prepared between the two countries, with particular difficulties in the areas of Defense, foreign policy, science, Higher Education and climate change, especially the oceans”, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, at the end of a visit to the Royal Brompton Hospital, in London, where he liked the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Remember that Portugal and England still have the oldest political alliance in the world, the “Luso-English Alliance”, established in 1373.
The signing of this agreement is only dependent on the recovery of António Costa’s state of health, who had to cancel his presence at the celebrations of June 10 in Braga, between Friday and today.
However, the executive source added that the leader of the Portuguese executive “continues to register a probable very favorable improvement” and the scenario is that he will be able to travel to London on Sunday, where he will arrive in the early evening.
Moreover, today, the President of the Republic, before journalists, took for granted that António Costa will travel to London on Sunday “to meet the British Prime Minister on Monday”.
The meeting with Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street is scheduled for 1 pm on Monday.
Still in relation to the bilateral agreement in preparation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated that cooperation in the commercial field is a matter regulated by Brexit, the United Kingdom’s exit agreement from the European Union.
Therefore, Portuguese-British trade relations can be lasting, as long as they respect the agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
