Hundreds of volunteer divers mobilized for “Noi e il Mare”, a vast operation of reclamation of the Italian seabed organized for the third consecutive year by the Italian Coast Guard and the European project Clean Sea LIFE on the occasion of World Oceans Day, which occurs today, June 8. Thus, until next 12 June, the campaign will allow the recovery of other solid waste from the sea, and any polluting material and the results of which will be added to the 20 tons of waste recovered in previous editions. Among the main ports touched by the event, just to name a few: in the Adriatic Chioggia, Trieste, San Benedetto del Tronto; Isola del Giglio, Porto Ercole and Ostia in the Tyrrhenian Sea, as well as Oristano and Catania. The operation is also ideally linked to the purposes of the ghost nets operation, conducted without interruption by the sub cores of the Coast Guard, which also immersed themselves on the occasion of the Oceans Day to remove the fishing initiative nets abandoned on the seabed, which represents a concrete damage to the marine environment, due to the synthetic micro-particles they disperse as well as a danger to the safety of divers and swimmers. Since 2019, over 36 tons of ghost nets have been recovered by the Coast Guard. “Clean Sea LIFE was formally concluded last year but, as you can see today, it continues to live thanks to the community that grew up around the project, which continues to work tirelessly for the protection of the sea. In Rimini, on the occasion of the “World Oceans Day”, the “INTO THE BLUE – SEA LIFE FEST 2022” event was celebrated, organized by the Cetacea Onlus Foundation, within which some important activities to protect the sea were held and the environment in the Port of Rimini from 2 to 11 June. La Guardia, has lent its assistance to the recovery activities of a ghost net in the sea by the sub association “DIVE PLA PADI” and of abandoned wrecks on the seabed of the port between the bridge of the Resistance and Ponte dei Mille, the damaging for the environment and dangerous for navigation. The recovery of the wrecks was possible thanks to the collaboration of the “SUB RIMINI GIAN NERI” association and the diving group of the Guardia di Finanza. The collected hulls were positioned on the quay with the collaboration of the “CARLINI” Shipyard and will be collected by “HERA SPA” for disposal thanks to the collaboration of the Municipality of Rimini. The entire event “INTO THE BLUE – SEA LIFE FEST 2022”, saw the involvement of private citizens and various local associations devoted to the defense of the sea, as well as the direct involvement of numerous associations, voluntary diving groups and local clubs. Numerous interventions in conferences, carried out by university speakers and members of scientific bodies, with the aim of raising awareness of a sustainable and correct use of the sea, the environment and its resources. In addition, the various issues relating to the state of health of our sea, climate change, marine alien species, marine litter, turtle nests and various projects with fishermen to reduce baycatch were discussed.
