Portugal never lost in the Nations League without Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo will fail, the fourth game of the group stage of the current edition of the League of Nations, this Sunday (19:45) in Geneva, but the truth is that the National Team never one without its captain in this competition. In a total of games already played, almost half (six without the most international of all Portuguese), but games added four wins and two draws and even these guaranteed a qualification for one of the decisive games.
We recall that Portugal won the first edition of this new UEFA competition, on the 9th of 2019, after having reached the Pay not to mention Cristiano Ronaldo. The captain stayed for the stage of the group stage, by choice of Fernando Santos, but Portugal guaranteed qualification for the final stage in a group that included Italy and Poland. The National Team started by beating Italy (1-0), with a goal from André Silva, then went on to beat Poland (3-2) with another goal from the Leipzig forward. Qualification ended up being sealed with a draw in Italy (0-0) and another, at Estádio da Luz, with the Poles (1-1), also with a goal by André Silva.
No longer Pay final, Cristiano Ronaldo came back and made himself noticed in the first game, with a up the sleeve against Switzerland (3-1), this Sunday’s shield. In the final, at Estádio do Dragão, the trophy was won with a solitary goal by Gonçalo Guedes.
In the second edition of the League of Nations, in 2020, Cristiano Ronaldo returned to two games, but Portugal won both without great difficulty. The first, at Estádio do Dragão, ended with a rout against Croatia (4-1), with goals from João Cancelo, Diogo Jota, João Félix and, once again, André Silva. Ronaldo still the game, at home, with Sweden, but Portugal won again without problems, 3-0, with Bernardo Silva opening the scoring, before Diogo Jota scored twice.
We recall that in this second edition, Portugal conceded only one defeat, against France (0-1), but did not manage to reach the Paythree points behind the world champions.
In the current edition of the League of Nations, Cristiano Ronaldo started the first game, at home, against Spain (1-1), on the substitutes bench, but ended up playing in the second half, scored by Ricardo Horta’s goal. After that, the captain started in the games against Switzerland (4-0) and the Czech Republic (2-0) and scored two more goals against the Swiss.
