Scrivener solid as a teen amateur shares the lead in Sweden – Golf Australia Magazine – The Women’s Game
The 19-year-old Italian joins the Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, the Scots Craig Howie and Santiago Tarrio from Spain at the top of the scoreboard after Thursday’s opening round at Halmstad Golf Club.
None of them have a professional win and Tarrio, No. 194, is the highest ranked player in the trio.
It is the second event of an event where 78 men and 78 women play on the same court – but off different tees – for a prize fund and a trophy.
Melgrati, who was born in Milan and attends the University of Arizona, made the most of his opportunity in the spotlight by making a birdie on his first two holes and then going birdie-eagle to start the nine backs.
“As soon as I got the invitation I said ‘Yes, I play’ because it’s great to compete with professional golfers. It’s amazing and it’s my dream too, so it’s coming true.” – Carolina Melgrati.
She finished with three birdies on her last five holes.
“It’s crazy – it’s so amazing,” Melgrati said. “As soon as I got the invitation I said ‘Yes, I play’ because it’s great to compete with professional golfers.
“It’s amazing and it’s my dream too, so it’s coming true.”
A group of four players is one shot behind, including the women Liz Young and Linn Grant, who are from Sweden.
Grant impressed when he played with compatriot Annika Sörenstam, one of the country’s foremost golfers ever who this week also acts as tournament host with another Swede, Henrik Stenson.
Sörenstam shot 74 and Stenson, Europe’s Ryder Cup captain, shot 70.
Howie was the first of the leaders to finish after a bogey-free round containing seven birdies.
“It will be really difficult for those who set it up to do it justice for both,” Howie, ranked No. 416, said of the course layout.
“It’s a different style of golf that we play from the women, but I think this golf course is a perfect mix for both and I think it’s a good fit for us and the women.
“There really could not be a better venue.”
Australia’s Jason Scrivener is in 11th place after shooting four under 68, while compatriot Maverick Antcliff is one shot further behind.
Whitney Hillier (71) is on a miracle.
