“Lyapis Trubetskoy” in the news: “Glory to Ukraine! Live Belarus!
In Europe, charitable concerts of “Lyapis Trubetskoy” are being used. A unique performance of the legend of Belarusian punk rock in the events.
Punk rock for Ukraine in the news
The anti-war tour of the musical group Spring in the Baltic States, returned to Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland. And on June 21, Lyapis Trubetskoy will perform for the first time with the owner of the concert in the Zurich suburb of Zollikon. The proceeds from the tour are sent to help Ukraine.
Sergei Mikhalok created “Lyapis Trubetskoy” in 1989, received a student at the Institute of Culture and Arts in Minsk. The name migrated to punk rock from the novel by Ilf and Petrov “The Twelve Chairs”. The rhymer Nikifor Lyapis briskly traded in poetry “in honor of Gavrila” under the pseudonym Trubetskoy. Halturka was in demand among unpretentious editors.
Straightforwardness, satire, shocking to the liking of a free culture. And daring punk rock also loves provocation, it likes to play on the exposed nerves of society, to put its fingers up to the elbow into the ulcers of time. There is also a protest against imperialism, despotism, poisonous post-Soviet ideological belching in the songs of Lyapis Trubetskoy. And now there is an opportunity to participate in it.
“Do not be cattle!”
For a quarter of a century, Lyapis Trubetskoy has recorded a dozen and a half albums, fifty videos, many hit songs. The group has won prestigious awards, its leader is the idol of millions of fans. In 2020, Mikhalok was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine. This is how a person works, that with a rich song, life is fun, and dying is not so scary. In order not to go far for what you can learn close, about the song “Do not be cattle!” — in more detail.
Premiere of the video “Don’t be cattle!” was in 2011. For the first time, Sergei Mikhalok sang a text that was not his own, a cult poem by the classic of Belarusian literature, poet and translator Yanka Kupala (1882-1942). The prophetic 16 lines were written in 1908 in Vilnius, where they were published by the first newspaper in the Belarusian language, Nasha Niva. The single “Lyapis Trubetskoy” to the words of Kupala was included in the album “Rabkor” and became a new hit.
Hit history
“For a long time I could not approach this poem. In a few lines of the epic and the history of the people, – the words of Mikhalok were distributed on the Internet. – I was shocked that the poems written many years ago and which were topical and focused on real life at that time are relevant and modern. In fact, Kupala tells the Belarusians what to do and how to live here and now – better than any modern politicians.”
Yanka Kupala. Who are you gay?
Who are you gay?
– Yours, tuteishy.
What do you want?
— Dolі lesha.
What share?
– Bread, salt.
And a hundred pains?
– Earth, vili.
Are you happy?
– Ў with a pile of weights.
Dze khrystsіsya?
– Jumpers.
Chym asvenchan?
– I cut, then.
What would you like?
– Don’t be cattle.
1908
What is the song about? About a Belarusian peasant who does not know his family-tribe. To the question “who are you”, he answers “tuteishy” (local). Why? The truth is that Belarusians have almost become a symbol of national self-consciousness. Due to the fact that geopolitics has severely tormented the Belarusian land for centuries, the Belarusian national liberation movement is touched by bleeding wounds.
Played the music of freedom
Belarus gained sovereignty as a European state when, after 1991, people erased the “prison of peoples” of the Soviet Union from geographical maps. Unfortunately, it is clear from the game of the day that the music did not play freely for long. Musician Sergei Mikhalok, along with his “Lyapis Trubetskoy” and other freethinkers, have long been hated by Lukashenka’s dictatorial regime.
In neighboring Putin’s Russia, times are bloodthirsty. The days are washed with blood. War criminals evaluate humanity in a mad war for the past, against peace, against freedom. Fortunately, in life, as in art, there are many colors. Hundreds of millions of people stand in solidarity with Ukraine in the fight against Putin’s fascism. And Switzerland too. I would like to believe in it.
Due to the fact that the brutal Russian government threatens nuclear threats …
In the meantime, there is a peaceful sky over Switzerland, there is a good chance to gather at the concert of “Lyapis Trubetskoy” in Zollikon to listen to “There are no cattle!” and other bright compositions of Belarusian punk rock.
Don’t be indifferent
“I changed the name,” Sergey Mikhalok explained to the fans. – The song is called “Don’t be cattle”, and not “Who are you getks?”, Like the original poem by Yanka Kupala. Because for me now “Do not be cattle” – that is, do not be a silent cattle, a ruminant animal, indifferent to everything that is happening around, satisfied with the contents of your feeder – this is the main motto. I even made myself a tattoo with this phrase – on my stomach.
What is certainly in the power of people is to be inspired and change calendars. In 2014, the Lyapis Trubetskoy group split into two: Brutto (soloist Mikhalok) and Trubetskoy. In January next year, Sergei celebrated his 50th birthday. And on February 24, Russia attacked Ukraine… Against the backdrop of Russia’s monstrous war against Ukraine, Sergei Mikhalok repeated the legend of Belarusian punk rock.
And now, on June 21, music is resisting, music is holding people for independence, for their ancestral land, language, culture, for ethnic diversity and national identity can be heard live in anticipation.
