Munich today – News from June 7th, 2022 – Munich
When her child was due to be born, when her life was supposed to be turned upside down in a positive sense, Alyona Lykholit’s world collapsed. Russia invaded Ukraine, and instead of in a Kyiv hospital in peacetime, the 41-year-old had to give birth to her son in an air raid shelter. The bombs were falling above, everything was dirty, but “I knew what to do,” says Alyona Lykholit. Her small happiness in the great misfortune was that Orestes is already her second child, so she knew the mechanisms of a birth.
Her husband urged her to flee with the two children – immediately before the birth, when she could hardly walk, and immediately afterwards. But Alyona Lykholit didn’t want to, the walls of the bunker offered her protection, at least. But as the attacks on Kyiv intensified, she and her mother decided to go after all. First to Lviv, and then bomb fields there, in the direction of Munich, where a friend offered help. Lykholit’s husband had to stay in Ukraine.
Alyona Lykholit and her two sons have been in Munich since mid-March. Little Sascha now goes to kindergarten, and his teacher raves about how openly and confidently the five-year-old treats the other children. However, in some situations it becomes clear what traces the war has also left on the boy: When he was asked to choose a symbol for his cloakroom and towel space, he wanted to choose a tank or a soldier. You can read in the article (SZ Plus) how he, his mother and his little brother cope with life here.
