Salzburg – Tuesday, 07.06.2022, 12:11 p.m
EC Red Bull Salzburg have strengthened their defense with Tyler Lewington.
The 27-year-old Canadian has played 384 games in the AHL and 12 games in the NHL over the past seven years. The engagement in the city of Mozart is his premiere in Europe. “I’m a reliable defender and I love competition,” said the right-hand shooter, who played two games for the Boston Bruins this season.
The tall defender grew up in the Canadian junior league WHL and has played in the AHL since 2015. Initially several seasons with the Hershey Bears, with whom he also reached the AHL Finals in 2015/16, followed by seasons with the Chicago Wolves and the Providence Bruins in the last two years.
Lewington has also been used in the NHL since 2018 and made a total of 12 appearances with the Washington Capitals, the Nashville Predators and last season with the Boston Bruins.
Lewington: Winning history and culture ‘lies to me’
The Canadian is now looking forward to his first appearance in Europe with the Red Bulls: “I’ve wanted to play in Europe for a long time and was very happy when the Red Bulls showed interest. I’ve only heard good things from other players playing in Europe. After speaking to the club, it was clear to me that the Red Bulls, with their winning history and proud culture, mean a lot to me.”
Salzburg’s head coach Matt McIlvane is quoted as saying: “Tyler is a very strong and stable defender who also strengthens our defense with his physical presence. He’s also a leader who can conquer the target in the defensive zone and make the play up front fast. With his strong character and leadership qualities, he fits very well into our team.”
