Anthony Elanga scores the first international goal for Sweden
Anthony Elanga put a bow on his memorable breakthrough season by scoring his first international goal ever.
Elanga came off the bench in a Scandinavian derby against Norway, with 2-0 for Sweden against Erling Haaland.
The Manchester United prospect pulled one back and made it 2-1, with a strike on injury time. And when it comes to goals, it was pretty good – a memorable way for Elanga to score his first international goal.
Elanga scores the first international goal
This was only Elanga’s third appearance for Sweden at an international level. All three matches have been as substitutes.
This goal was exactly what the 20-year-old needed after a difficult end to the season for Manchester United. He curled in an effort outside the box after good connecting games with his teammates.
Elanga was a bright spot during United’s season and scored goals in the Champions League away against Atletico Madrid, as well as goals away against Leeds and Brentford.
But his Atletico attack was his last in the campaign, and he seemed to fall down from United’s overall nausea.
This has nevertheless been a really positive season for the youngster, who took a big step forward in 2022 under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. His call-up to Sweden’s senior squad reflects his rise to the first team.
Now he has to work to impress the new manager Erik ten Hag during the pre-season, and his international feats will not hurt him at all.
Sweden meets Serbia later in the week before another match with Norway, and Elanga’s goal gives him a strong call to start for his country for the very first time.
