New radars in Lisbon. 151 “caught” in the first 24 hours
In the first 24 hours in which the 41 new speed cameras in Lisbon were turned on, more than one hundred and a half drivers were caught speeding. Between 11 am on the 1st of June and 9:30 am on the 2nd, at least 151 infractions were recorded, according to Nascer do SOL.
Among the areas where more infractions were detected are Av. Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, located next to the Escola Superior de Comunicação Social, in Benfica, west-east, with 49 occurrences. And also Av. City of Porto, next to the Humberto Delgado Airport, in the North-South direction, with 20 occurrences recorded.
The new radars went into operation last Wednesday and drivers who exceed the established limits – generally 50 or 80 km/h – will begin to be fined.
In the last six months, only those who passed through a mobile radar by the PSP or the Municipal Police were fined. The Lisbon Chamber expects to collect around 5.5 million euros in fines for the municipality’s coffers.
On a national level, Portuguese roads will also be monitored by more than 300 radars that must ‘shoot’ when motorists exceed the 20 km/h legally established.
