Cologne. The two top Cologne doctors, Professor Michael Hallek and Professor Christian Karagiannidis, are committed to the network of Cologne University Hospital and Cologne Municipal Clinics. “We have the unique opportunity to create stable, high-quality care and at the same time to implement research projects that are unique worldwide,” said Hallek in an interview with the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” (Saturday edition). The aim is to create a culture of innovation that is close to the patient. Karagiannidis explained: “Now Cologne has to go forward, with a lot of positive energy and visions for the future, otherwise Cologne will fall far behind at some point.” As good as the opportunity for the clinic group is, the danger of paraphrasing it is just as great. Munich has a reliable biotech location, Berlin is catching up with difficulty. “There aren’t an infinite number of healthcare professionals – we have to fight for these people,” Karagiannidis said.
The hospital group consisting of Cologne University Hospital and Cologne City Hospitals has been under discussion for years. However, a decision is still pending. Above all, there is currently a lack of approval from the NRW state government. Cologne’s Lord Mayor Henriette Reker had demanded a few days ago that the CDU and Greens should speak out in favor of the association at the coalition negotiations in Düsseldorf. “This hanging game is bad for the mood in both clinics,” Hallek told the newspaper. The two top doctors are convinced that a hospital network would significantly improve both the basic care of patients and cutting-edge research. It is also scientifically proven that a minimum amount of operations leads to better results.
