Di Gennaro: “Verona, Cioffi ok. Now go on with the same mentality “
The former Gialloblù midfielder: “The club has already sold several players in past years”
Column of the Hellas midfield between 1981 and 1988, with which he won the historic Scudetto under the guidance of the legendary Osvaldo Bagnoli, Antonio Di Gennaro spoke to our microphones about the current moment of Verona.
In fact, the Setti club is making several changes, starting with the management. Tony D’Amico has recently become Atalanta’s sporting director. The same goes for the bench, with Gabriele Cioffi who will take over from Igor Tudor.
Di Gennaro, what do you think of this farewell from D’Amico?
“We are talking about a person who has done a great job in recent years, especially in looking for and very interesting players thanks to whom finding Verona has made excellent capital gains. I did not think D’Amico would say goodbye, but it is also true that at the moment Atalanta is a step above Verona and will also try to relaunch“.
Marroccu is spoken of as his replacement.
“I know him for what he has done in these years at Cagliari and so that he is a trusted man of Cellino. Beyond the single name, the right alchemy must be created between a sports manager and the coach, just as has happened in recent years between D’Amico and Juric and then with Tudor. For its part, the club must make available the budget and play football in the right way“.
And what is your idea of Cioffi instead?
“With Udinese he proposed a good game both at home and away. Much like Hellas in mentality. It is clear that it will also depend on the players they have available and on the module that he will adopt“.
In A, however, he has only trained in recent months. Could this choice by Setti be a gamble?
“In football, even six months can be enough. The important thing is to have personality and have, these things make the difference“.
More generally, changing so much in one session could be risky, don’t you think?
“Verona has also made many sales in recent years, I am thinking of Rrahmani, Kumbulla and Amrabat. This year Caprari, Ilic and Tameze have exploded. Without forgetting Barak. These are dynamics that do not concern only Verona then and also from the ambitions of the club: if the goal to reach the top ten is a matter, if a club is aiming for Europe, the bar is clearly raised, including the goal. ‘ economic aspect and the wages of individuals players. In the latter case, the discussion changes“.
Sure, but in this case the demobilization seems to be bigger.
“Verona has always been able to replace players who have gone away. The important thing is that the club maintains the mentality it has had in recent years that has allowed Hellas to always have its say in the league.“.
