many from internships and hardly any applicants
Business
Salzburg’s companies are urgently looking for holiday trainees. Because of the lockdowns, no internships were given for years. Now hundreds of positions for interns, volunteers and holiday workers are advertised. However, young applicants are a long time coming.
A simple search on the web is sufficient. You will find what you are looking for on dozens of job portal sites.
“There is a shortage of skilled workers everywhere”
There are plenty of holiday jobs this year, says Gabriele Tischler from the education department of the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce: “Companies are looking very hard in all sectors. There is a shortage of skilled workers everywhere, and interns are welcome everywhere.”
It is also unclear to experts why so few young people are interested in working during the summer holidays this year. One possible reason is the low birth rate from 2004 to 2007. In these years, an average of one eight fewer children were born across Austria – only 76,000 instead of an average of around 86,000.
More young people are refusing any activity
Another explanation is the increased number of young people who do not start any training after the ninth grade, but who also do not take any jobs. Since the beginning of the lockdown, sociologists have been talking about an increased occurrence of these so-called “NEET young people”.
