► The role: Before Ballauf was transferred to Cologne, he worked in Düsseldorf alongside Chief Inspector Flemming. When his wife left him with their two children, he emigrated. He completed four years of special training with the Florida Drug Enforcement Agency. Ballauf’s girlfriend at the time died there during an operation. A short time later, he was caught drunk driving and charged. He was transferred to Cologne and became head of the homicide squad.
In Cologne, he follows the background and limits of criminal prosecution with his thoughtful, relaxed and sharpened gaze. He lives as a single and is a permanent resident of a small pension. He often questions this lifestyle. Above all, the end of his marriage still burdens him. Getting involved in new relationships is difficult for him.
► The actor: Actor Klaus J. Behrendt (62) has been working as a crime scene investigator since 1992 in the role of Max Ballauf. Unlike his crime scene role, Behrendt is a family man. He has a large patchwork family: He lives with his second wife and her son from an original relationship in Berlin-Charlottenburg and has two sons and a daughter from his first marriage.

► The role: Freddy Schenk is himself the son of a police officer. For a long time, he saw himself as the “head” of Murder Commission 3 in Cologne and was convinced that he would get the position as head of it. Colleague Max Ballauf was then given the job, which meant that the relationship between the two was not ideal at first.
Inspector Schenk is known as a philistine. The father of two loves sports shoes and special street suits. He gets stuck with his wife because he works so much. Other colleagues from the homicide squad sometimes despair of the choleric detective. In most cases, the beefy police officer reacts very emotionally.
► The actor: Freddy Schenk is played by actor Dietmar Bär (61). He has been investigating in this role in the Cologne crime scene since 1997.
