“Top Gun: Maverick” had the second best debut of the year in Portugal
The film premiered last Thursday around the world and already one of the biggest hits in the career of actor Tom Cruise
The movie “Top Gun: Maverick” was the most seen in Portuguese cinemas last weekend. The film starring Tom Cruise premiered last Thursday (the 26th) and by the end of Sunday was seen by 99,137 people – a number much higher than the film that appears in second place in the ranking of the weekend, “Doctor Strange Multiverso da Madness”, which over the weekend had just 15,018 viewers.
These numbers make “Top Gun: Maverick” the second premiere of the year, only surpassed by the Marvel movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, which reached 111,554 viewers in its first weekend on display in early May.
This also means that, on the fourth day of screening, “Top Gun: Maverick” is already the most watched film of the year in Portugal, according to provisional data from ICA – Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film is a sequel to the 1986 hit, also starring Tom Cruise, now 59, and directed by Tony Scott. The sequel was scheduled for the late summer of 2020, but it was several times as a consequence of the day’s implementation against covid-19.
In this new film, we meet pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who returns to the United States Navy’s fighter training program (also known as “Top Gun”), where he will train a group of young pilots, among them his best friend, now deceased, Goose.
According to The Hollywood Reporterthe new “Top Gun” achieved in its first days of opening a box office revenue of more than 124 million euros in the North American market and has already collected more than 60 million euros outside the United States, in the first days.
This is the first time a Tom Cruise movie has opened with more than $100 million at the box office.
