The new International Relations Notebook has been published on the website of the University of San Marino: focus on EU association agreements with third countries
“The text makes a comparison between the essential aspects that structure the association agreements between the European Union and the associated states of Eastern and Western Europe with clarity of style and analytical rigor”.
Thus the director of the Research Center for International Relations (CRRI) of the University of the Republic of San Marino, Michele Chiaruzzidescribed in a note on new Notebook published on the internet portal of the University of San Marino.
Maria Giacomini, fellow and member of the Technical Committee of the Centeris theauthor of the in-depth study, the latest in a series of publications launched in 2018: “The research – explains Giacomini – aims to provide a simplified representation of the process of association with the European Union”.
“The text – comments the director of the Center – is able to offer, perhaps for the first time in San Marino, a clear and basic framework on the fundamental characteristics of the associative process that has also involved our Republic for seven years. Without knowing these fundamental characteristics – continues the academic – it is not possible to understand the particular characteristics of the San Marino path or understand its dynamics and development, much less its realistic perspectives “.
Particular attention is paid to the “alternative to accession” association path, which is the reference type of agreement for San Marino as a State “associating” with the European Union.
The agreements are analyzed in a comparative key and include the European integration process of Switzerland (from sectoral agreements to the draft institutional framework agreement), the Agreement on the European Economic Area (SEE) of Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway, EU relations with the neighboring countries of Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova), the Post Brexit Agreement with the United Kingdom.
“The text is dismissed while the war in Ukraine is raging in Europe – points out Chiaruzzi -. When a State associated with the European Union, attacked and dismembered by a power, claims despite all its European path as an indispensable reality and a crucial perspective, then the importance of that path is revealed for everyone, once again but with the utmost urgency. an existential choice “.
