Portugal fails the plenary session after the inaugural round of the ISA Junior World Cup in El Salvador – Surf
The Portuguese performance in the opening round of the Junior World Cup El Salvador was close to being perfect, but it ended with one of the 12 representatives of nationals in the competition already falling to the repechages. In one of the last heats of Carvalho’s second day of action, round 2 of the U-18 women’s main frame is expected, defined by the category, thus, Portugal had an unaltered start to the competition. Until then, the corner team was managing to pass this first round with all elements of the four categories in competition. Of the six surfers that entered the scene this Sunday, only the youngest of them all, Jaime Veselko, in the men’s Under-16, managed to emerge victorious. Francisco Ordo Fortes, Martim Fortes, Gabriela Dinis and last wave, occurred, Martim Beatriz, last wave, occurred passing Teixeira station and last wave. After Martim Nunes and Francisco Queimado respectively won as batteries in the inaugural round in men’s Under-18s, Francisco Ordonhas got into action this Sunday in heat 31. The Portuguese surfer scored 10.20 points, disputed in a won by the Argentine Manuel Torreani, com10.64, and where Chia-chi Yu (9.73), from Taipei, and the Dominican Miguel Castillo (4.37) fell in the repechage.
Thus, in the next round Francisco Ordonhas will compete in heat 16, against the competition of the Canadian Wheeler Hasburgh, the Chinese Kaiteng Jiang and the French Nicolas Paulet. This is in a category in which the National Team keeps the three surfers in the main competition.
The same did not happen in the under-18 women’s category, which only went into the water this Sunday. The Brazilian things started with Gabriel Dinis, who scored 8.83 in heat 3, being only surpassed by the Dutch Eva Hoffmann, with 10.57 points, but ahead of Maya Carpinelli (7.37) and the Panamanian Maya Figueroa ( 3.40).
Then, in heat 1, Benedita Teixeira had a similar performance, having been classified, 6.87 points, in a dispute between the young Canadian surfing prodigy Erin Brooks, who competes at both levels. Brooks added 10 points and gave no chance to the competition8, where the Italian Francesca Valleti (5.00) and the Uruguayan Manuela Carballo (1.97) went to the repechage.
Finally, in one of the last heats of the day, Beatriz Carvalho found it very difficult to face the sea at pico de cana, with the waves closing in a lot. With the Canadian Jasmine Porter holding the victory, with 8.17 points, the Portuguese opportunity to guarantee the position, but a fall in the finalization of the last wave, ended up guaranteeing her out of the main frame, where she still followed the Panamanian Evelyn Chavez (4.60). Beatriz Carvalho added only 4.00 points and in the position was the Uruguayan Ema Beltran, with 1.80 points.
In this way, Beatriz Carvalho will be forced to continue in the repechage board, where the next defeat is eliminated from the competition for good. Still, there’s nothing to stop her from reaching the final, if she beats all 10 repechage rounds. For now, she will not be in heat 11 of round 1, where she will face Chilean Estela Lopez, Colombian Angelina Decesare and Guatemalan Juana Pos.
In the opposite direction, Gabriela Dinis and Benedita Teixeira follow in the main frame. Dinis will be in heat 2, where she will measure strength with the Brazilian Kiany Hyakutake, the Argentine Sinai Borelli and the Japanese Kana Nakashio. Benedita will return to action in heat 10, against Australian Ellie Harrison, Tahitian Heimitti Fierro and New Zealander Natasha Gouldsbury.
Finally, in men’s under-16s, Jaime Veselko and Martim Fortes still needed to join the action. The first was Jaime and he did it with mastery, winning heat 27, with 10.73 points, followed by better balance in a dispute with the Swede O’Connor, who got 10.67 points. For the repechage of the Argentine Thiago Passeri Pezzati (8.13) and the Senegalese Djibril Gueye (5.80).
Then, in one of the last heats of this second day of action, Martim Fortes added 9.17 points, being only surpassed by the Argentine Francisco Cosoleto (9.30), while the Senegalese Cherif Adrame Diop (6.40) and the Uruguayan Thiago Corbo ( 4) ,94) were thrown into the playoffs. Something that leaves Portugal still with the three surfers in the competition in the main frame, as happened in women’s Under-16, where this Sunday there was no action.
Thus, in the next round Jaime Veselko will be in heat 13, where he will be joined by Hawaiian Luke Tema, Canadian Jonas Meskis and Spanish Ivan Flor Sota, while Martim Fortes will be in the 16th and final heat, where he will have ahead is the Colombian Romeo Chavez, the Italian Michelle Scopa and the Frenchman Iñigo Madina.
The action at the Junior ISA World Championship resumes in the early afternoon of this Monday, with the completion of the round of the main teams of the four categories in competition. Which means that the Portuguese team will have 11 surfers in the competition to contest an important passage to round 3.
